What is it?
The Daily Cure for me is trying to smell taste touch—really experience— something, each day, that reminds me that I'm alive and, mostly, happy to be here. A small moment that should go a long way, at least in theory.-

La Cartoleria
I have always loved paper, and most things made of paper. I love all weights and textures of the wood-pulp wonder. I love different configurations of rules, margins, grids and holes. I love binders and boxes and envelopes. I love … Continue reading

Transitions/Color Story #8: A baguette travels to Italy
This wasn’t initially written as a poem (I’m not a poet) but it really wanted to look like one, so I obliged. Every time we say we’re going to travel light. And every time it’s like moving a circus complete … Continue reading

Hanging right out there
‘Tis the season—well, actually, when isn’t it?—to eschew your fine urban frocks and to hang out unselfconsciously on your own balcony. ‘Tis the season to be plucking dead leaves from your geraniums. Watering. Humming a mindless tune. Perhaps sipping on … Continue reading
Il pomodoro sardo: The Sardinian tomato
I love tomatoes. And the more tomatoes there are to love, the happier my heart. Lucky, then, that I am in the land of the tomato. The land where pizza came into being to showcase the San Marzano. The land … Continue reading

Sometimes, for a change of pace, it’s nice to take the more traditional route and make use of i bagni at the beach. While I definitely prefer the Mediterranean Sea in its naked, for-the-most-part un-art-directed form (please see “Now that’s … Continue reading
The daily -ism
We’ve all heard it said. “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” But this is one of those things that’s much easier bantered about than done. On vacation, it’s fun to fully immerse yourself in the way other people … Continue reading
Torno subito
For Janet. Here’s an Italian phrase worth knowing. Simple. Useful. Completely analogous to its English version. And constantly in fashion: Torno subito. “I’ll be right back.” I expect that in every culture in the world it means exactly two things. … Continue reading
Taking comfort where you find it
Time today has been short; not more than 15 minutes for blogging. But what I have to say takes about ten words or less. Don’t hold me to that, but here goes: Comfort food Italian style doesn’t get any better … Continue reading
The all important “far niente”
I know that whoever adapted Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat Pray Love for the screen got there before me with the phrase “il dolce far niente,” but you can never explore quite enough the importance of this idea. Besides, in the film … Continue reading
