What is it?
The Daily Cure for me is trying to smell taste touch—really experience— something, each day, that reminds me that I'm alive and, mostly, happy to be here. A small moment that should go a long way, at least in theory.-

L’erboristeria
Somewhere between the pharmacy and the health food store, with a dose of monastery thrown in for good measure (Think: monks making elixirs from herbs grown in their cloistered gardens) stands the Italian erboristeria, or herbalist. These shops dot the … Continue reading

From the heart
Italians are reputedly great lovers. And I believe, perhaps, it’s true. They love—in fact, they seem to experience most emotions—with all their hearts, if one can be permitted to generalize. They are comfortable with being emotional, expressing their feelings, proclaiming … Continue reading
Down (halfway) under
Walking through the streets of Milan is endlessly entertaining to me. I find myself inventing errands to run, just to have a reason to step out and see, as Moll Flanders says, “what offers.” What offers is an intense variety … Continue reading

License to be happy
Part of starting a life in a new country is accepting what bureaucracy foists upon you, and in Italy, this can be a considerable load. Walking to the weekly market on Via Vincenzo Monti last Friday, I passed the neighborhood … Continue reading

Sunday pizzata.
I know you saw this coming. Sooner or later, this blog was bound to be about pizza, that more or less inevitable comestible, if one is talking about the pleasures of Italy. So, I bow to predictability. Once a weekend, … Continue reading
Postcard #3: Arco Della Pace
[Most postcards that you find at the tobacconists are old, dusty, sepia things that depict the city’s monuments from a distance. They are cool, funky artifacts and they definitely capture that stately remove that—over time—becomes invisibility. I wanted to make … Continue reading

Milan color story #1
Ochres and terracottas. These colors seduce my heart in the first days of Autumn. Perhaps because of the bittersweet interplay between their inherent warmth and the weakening power of the sun. (We cling to warmth wherever we can find it, … Continue reading
Can I come in?
It’s a memory: I don’t live in Milan yet. But I’m visiting the city with one of my best friends, Keith. We’ve had a couple cocktails too many, and we’re roaming the swanky Via Senato aimlessly going I-don’t-remember-where. Keith’s eye, … Continue reading
