Luna Park: A kick in the seat of adulthood
There it sprawls, among the leafless trees at the foot of the Castello Sforzesco: the Luna Park. In stark contrast to the arthritic bend of bare branches, stand the makeshift rides and booths, festooned with lightbulbs and neon, stars and … Continue reading

Animal nature
This weekend, we had to escape the city, our routine, and ourselves. It was time. We needed nature, animals—stuff that has nothing to do with our M-F everyday fare. And we found it, at the Fattoria Pasqué outside Varese, an … Continue reading
Fashion: the flip side

The train for anywhere
For D.L. who dreamed of riding the rails. There are days, no matter how happy you are, when you just feel like going. Anywhere. Every plane that crosses overhead represents a possible escape and a potential surprise destination. “That person, … Continue reading
License to be happy
Part of starting a life in a new country is accepting what bureaucracy foists upon you, and in Italy, this can be a considerable load. Walking to the weekly market on Via Vincenzo Monti last Friday, I passed the neighborhood … Continue reading
Postcard #4: Missing. Remembering.
[Because there is no one to send this to me, I send it to myself: I love Italy, the gifts is has given me, the sense of family and place and belonging—though I will always and forever be a foreigner—and … Continue reading
