What is it?
The Daily Cure for me is trying to smell taste touch—really experience— something, each day, that reminds me that I'm alive and, mostly, happy to be here. A small moment that should go a long way, at least in theory.-

A real palazzo
The word “palazzo” is thrown around loosely here. At the end of the day, it’s used to mean “apartment building.” But there are, in Milan, palazzi which deserve the unavoidable association an English speaker makes with the word “palace.” Here … Continue reading

Lugano color story #1: Black and cream
Today, a story from the archives. Rewind to that March day-trip to Lugano. Under undecided skies, the lakeside city (or is it a town?) of Lugano revealed its true duo-toned heart to me. After having taken several photographs, I realized … Continue reading

Spring storm
Post #6 from our Easter week in Burgundy. Everything smells different right before it hits. The light changes. The temperature drops. Things are hushed, then windy. The gray grows in intensity overhead, while underneath roiling clouds, beiges turn to gold. … Continue reading
Pissenlits / dandelions
Post #5 from our Easter week in Burgundy. NOTE: I can hardly look at a dandelion without thinking of World War II, of hunger, of doing without, of survival and—despite all that— of happiness. I think, whether we like it … Continue reading

Abbracci e baci / Hugs and kisses
Birds are doing it. Bees are doing it. Flowers and dogs and trees are doing it. Every park bench is taken. Every hidden corner. It’s happening astride motor-scooters at 45 kilometers per hour. In bus windows. On city monuments. Everywhere … Continue reading
Wisteria
Milan is not what I dreamed of when I thought of Italy before coming here. It lacks the golden light of Tuscany. The ochres of Rome. The romance of Florence and Venice. It is a “working” city—urban, almost industrial by … Continue reading
Who has seen the wind?
“Who has seen the wind? Neither you nor I…” But we can marvel nonetheless, and call it by name. Actually, we can call them by name, as the winds—at least in Italy—are plural, and go by first names only. And … Continue reading
Special delivery: Inter loses to Milan 0-3
My local bar, Ranieri, is decked in black curtains today. Last night in the Derby della Madonnina (any game between the two soccer clubs of Milan), Inter lost to arch rival Milan. A happy day for the black-and-red’s. A day … Continue reading
