What is it?
The Daily Cure for me is trying to smell taste touch—really experience— something, each day, that reminds me that I'm alive and, mostly, happy to be here. A small moment that should go a long way, at least in theory.-

The trick to being prime minister
Berlusconi is in the crosshairs again. This time for cavorting with young escorts, even though, as he said in his own defense, it was in a strictly amicable and—here’s the clincher—”elegant” way. Berlusconi? Elegant? Will oxymoron’s never cease? As the … Continue reading

Harvesting future memories
One day last October, though I was deep in my Italian city routine, my hands smelt of lavender. I was making sachets from the flowers I’d harvested in France over the previous summer. I was missing Burgundy, the country, the … Continue reading

The beauty of boredom*

Let the games begin
Year round, moored in the river, mostly unused and waiting, are two small punts—one blue, one red—each with a raised platform at one end. On one side of the prow is written: “You will go.” Tu iras. On the other … Continue reading

Let’s take the road less traveled by
Post #4 from our Easter week in Burgundy. Pull on your old jacket and your rubber boots. The weather is undecided and last night’s rain has left things saturated with wetness and a deeper hue. The snails and slugs will … Continue reading
Closed for Easter and for writing
Dear Friends, I’m closing “The Daily {French-Italian} Cure” for seven days of Easter holiday a.k.a. “Trying to Finish Writing My Book While in France.” That sounds terribly smug and pompous for a zillion reasons—not to mention cliché—and I apologize. It’s … Continue reading

All things rubber
It’s a short leap from wisteria to bathing caps, don’t you think? And from there to rain boots, rubber tubing, textured floor tiles and file cabinets. Perhaps this seems a stretch to you, but in the world of all-things-rubber, stretchiness … Continue reading
The daily -ism
We’ve all heard it said. “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” But this is one of those things that’s much easier bantered about than done. On vacation, it’s fun to fully immerse yourself in the way other people … Continue reading
